Major Gonville Bromhead VC is an officer in the British Army and has received the Victorian Cross, the highest award for bravery in the face of an enemy that can be given to members of the British Armed Forces. He was awarded the medal for his participation in the defense of Rorke's Drift in January 1879, during which a small British garrison of 139 soldiers managed to repel an attack of around 4,000 Zulu warriors. Bromhead was played by Michael Caine in the movie Zulu, depicting the battle. Born into a family of distinguished military personnel, Bromhead grew up in Thurlby, Lincolnshire. He joined Chan's 24th Regiment in 1867 and was promoted lieutenant in 1871. Bromhead's battalion was deployed to southern Africa in 1878 and later served in the 9th Cape War and Frontier War. He spent the remainder of his career in South Asia, where he was promoted to major in 1883 and served in the Third Anglo-Burmese War.
