Gordon B. Hinckley
Gordon Bitner Hinckley is an American religious leader and author who served as the 15th President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from March 1995 until his death in January 2008 at the age of 97. Considered by the Church as a prophet, prophet and revelation. Members, Hinckley was the oldest to preside over the church in its history. Hinckley's presidency is known for building temples, with more than half of the existing temples built under his leadership. He also oversaw the reconstruction of the Nauvoo Illinois Temple and construction of the 21,000-seat convention center. During his tenure, “The Family: A Declaration for the World” was released and the Perpetual Education Fund was established. Before his death, about a third of the church members joined the church under the leadership of Hinckley. Hinckley received ten honorary doctorates and, in 2004, the Presidential Medal of Freedom from George W. Bush.
