Payne, along with Roy Acuff and Ernest Tubb, greatly influenced Williams' later musical style. Williams began his musical career at Montgomery in 1937, when producers at local radio station WSFA hired him to perform and host 15 minutes. He formed the backup group Drifting Cowboys run by his mother and dropped out of school to take time for his career.
