Considered one of the most influential American singers and musicians of the 20th century, he recorded 35 singles reaching the top 10 of the Billboard Country & Western Best Sellers charts, including 11. The unit reached number 1. Born and raised in Alabama, Williams was given guitar lessons by African-American blues musician Rufus Payne in exchange for lunch or money. Payne, along with Roy Acuff and Ernest Tubb, greatly influenced Williams' later musical style. Williams began his musical career at Montgomery in 1937, when producers at local radio station WSFA hired him to perform and host 15 minutes. He formed the backup group Drifting Cowboys run by his mother and dropped out of school to take time for his career.
