Harvey Lawrence Pekar is an American underground comic author, music critic, and media personality best known for his autobiographical comic book American Splendor. In 2003, the series inspired a well-received adaptation of the same name. Often described as the "Cleveland Prize-winning poet," Pekar "has helped change the way of judging and perceiving graphic novels, drawn memoir, and autobiographical comics." Pekar describes his work as “an autobiography written as you go. The themes are survival, finding a job, finding a company, a place to live, finding a creative exit. Life is a war of attrition. You have to be active on all fronts. It's one thing after another. I tried to control a chaotic universe. And it was a loss. But I can't let go. I tried, but I couldn't. "
