Howard Pyle
Howard Pyle is an American painter and author who writes primarily for teenagers. He is originally from Wilmington, Delaware, and he spent the last year of his life in Florence, Italy. In 1894 he began teaching illustration at the Drexel Academy of Art, Science and Industry. After 1900 he founded his own school of art and illustration under the name of Howard Pyle School of Illustration Art. The scholar Henry C. Pitz then used the term Brandywine School to refer to the Wyeth family painters and illustrators in the Brandywine region, many of whom studied with Pyle. He has a lasting influence on a number of artists who have become famous in their own right; N. C. Wyeth, Frank Schoonover, Thornton Oakley, Allen Tupper True, Stanley Arthur and many others followed him. His 1883 classic, The Joyful Adventures of Robin Hood, is still printed and his other books often have medieval Europe, including a quartet about King Arthur.
