James MacGregor Burns is an American historian and political scientist, presidential biographer, and leadership studies expert. He is Woodrow Wilson Emeritus Professor of Government at Williams University and Outstanding Leadership Fellow at the James MacGregor Burns School of Leadership at the School of Public Policy at the University of Maryland, College Park. In 1971, Burns received the Pulitzer Prize and the National History and Biography Book Prize for his work on the 32nd President of the United States, Roosevelt: Freedom Soldier. Burns shifts the focus of leadership studies from the characteristics and actions of great people to the interaction of leaders and their members as collaborators. He is best known for his contributions to schools of transactional, transformative, ambitious and visionary leadership.
