James Naismith is a Canadian-American physical educator, physician, Christian chaplain, sports coach and basketball inventor. After moving to the United States, he wrote the original basketball rule book and founded the basketball program of the University of Kansas. Naismith lived to see basketball accepted as an Olympic demonstration sport in 1904 and as an official event at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, as well as the birth of the National League and NCAA tournament. Born and raised on a farm near Almonte, Ontario, Naismith studied and taught PE at McGill University in Montreal until 1891 before moving to Springfield, Massachusetts, USA later that year - there he was Designing basketball games while teaching at the YMCA International Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts. Seven years after the invention of basketball, Naismith received her medical degree in Denver in 1898.
