Jan Morris is a Welsh tourism historian, author and writer. She is best known for her Pax Britannica trilogy, British Empire history, and portraits of cities including Oxford, Venice, Trieste, Hong Kong and New York. She published under her birth name, James, until 1972 when she underwent sex change surgery after switching from male to female. As James Morris, she was part of the 1953 British Peak Everest Expedition, the first to cross the mountain. She was the only journalist to accompany the expedition, with the crew scaling a camp at an elevation of 22,000 feet in the mountains and was famous for having successfully climbed as published in The Times on June 2, 1953, the date of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
