Jean Cruguet is a retired Franco-American Thoroughbred who won the Three Thrones of the United States of purebred racing. At the age of five, Cruguet was placed in an orphanage after his father abandoned his family and his mother was unable to heal herself. Between the ages of ten and sixteen, he lives in a secondary school run by Roman Catholic priests, where he says he was physically abused. At the age of sixteen, a friend of his grandfather suggested a little Cruguet on a purebred racetrack. His very young career as a horse racer was interrupted by compulsory military service and he served in the French army during the Algerian War. After being removed from his post, Cruguet returned to purebred racing. He replaced army jockey Yves Saint-Martin at the stables headed by trainer François Mathet. After the demobilization of Saint-Martin, Cruguet had to find new trips with limited success.
