João Pedro Coelho Marinho de Sousa, known as João Sousa, is a Portuguese professional tennis player who is ranked 77th in the world by the Professional Tennis Association on May 28 and 9, 2020. A leading player since July 2013 and with three single ATP World Tour titles, Sousa is considered the best Portuguese player of all time. He is nicknamed Conquistador for sharing his birthplace with Afonso I of Portugal, the country's first king. Sousa was coached by former player Frederico Marques and trained at the BTT Tennis Academy in Barcelona. Sousa started playing tennis at the age of 7. After winning the title of national youth, at the age of fifteen, he decided to invest in his career by moving to Barcelona. After an unimpressed competitive career, Sousa moved professionally in 2008 and won his first solo tournament in 2009. He started playing at the ATP Challenger Tour in 2008, winning the league championship. First match at this level in 2011.
