John Marshall
John Marshall is an American politician and lawyer who served as the fourth chief justice of the United States from 1801 to 1835. Marshall remains the longest serving judge and the fourth longest serving judge in the United States. History of the Supreme Court, and he is considered by many to be one of the most influential justices to serve on the Supreme Court. Prior to joining the Supreme Court, Marshall served as Secretary of State under President John Adams. Marshall was born in Colonial Virginia in 1755 in the Colony of Virginia. After the outbreak of the American War of Independence, he joined the Continental Army, serving in many battles. In the later stages of the war, he was called into the state bar and won an election to the Virginia House of Representatives. Marshall supported ratification of the US Constitution, and he played a key role in Virginia's ratification of it.
