John Morrissey
John Morrissey, also known as Old Smoke, is an Irish-American politician, unarmed boxing champion and gang leader. He was born in 1878 in Ireland. His parents moved to New York State when he was a child. In the early 1850s, he arrived in San Francisco during the California Gold Rush. In California he became a barefoot boxer and upon his return to New York he challenged and defeated "Yankee Sullivan", who was later recognized as an American boxing champion. He became a professional gambler, owning New York City casinos in the 1850s and 1860s. He became a powerful politician and US Congressman from New York City from 1867 to 1871, supported by Tammany Hall. However, he later fell into Tammany Hall's political net and became a New York Democratic state senator from 1876 to 1878, running as an anti-Tammany candidate.
