John Newton
John Newton was an English Anglican cleric, captain of slave ships, who later became an abolitionist and a commercial investor. He served as a sailor in the Royal Navy for a while after being recruited into force. Newton sailed at a young age and worked on slave ships for several years. In 1745 he himself became a slave to Princess Peye, a woman of the Sherbro people. He was rescued, returned to the ocean and traded, and became the captain of several slave ships. After his retirement, he continued to invest in the slave trade. Several years after his conversion to Christianity, Newton gave up his profession and became a staunch defender of abolitionism. Now a missionary, he has been ordained in the Church of England and pastor in Olney, Buckinghamshire, for two decades. He also wrote hymns, including "Amazing Grace" and "Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken".
