John Rutledge
John Rutledge is an American politician and lawyer, was one of the first Deputy Justices of the Supreme Court and second Chief Justice of the Court. In addition, he was the first president of South Carolina and then its first governor after the declaration of independence. Born in Charleston, South Carolina, Rutledge began a legal career after studying at Middle Temple in City London. He is the brother of Edward Rutledge, a signatory of the Declaration of Independence. Rutledge was a member of the congress of the Stamp Act, which opposes taxes imposed by the British Parliament on thirteen colonies. He was also a member of the Continental Congress before being elected governor of South Carolina. He served as governor for most of the American Revolutionary War. After briefly returning to Congress, Rutledge was appointed to the Court of the Prime Minister of South Carolina.
