Kate Douglas Wiggin
Kate Douglas Wiggin is an American educator and author of children's stories, most notably Sunnybrook Farm's Rebecca Farm's classic children's novel. She started her first free kindergarten in San Francisco in 1878. With her sister in the 1880s, she also founded a kindergarten teacher training school. Kate Wiggin dedicated her adult life to children's rights at a time when children were often seen as cheap labor. Wiggin came to California to study kindergarten methods. She began teaching in San Francisco with her supportive sister Nora, and the two were instrumental in establishing over 60 poor kindergartens in San Francisco and Oakland. She moved from California to New York and, unemployed in kindergarten, devoted herself entirely to literature. She sent Stories of Patsy and The Bird's Christmas Carol to Houghton, Mifflin & Co., who immediately accepted them.
