Katie Bouman

Katherine Louise Bouman is an American engineer and computer scientist working in the field of computer imagery. She led the development of an algorithm for imaging black holes, known as Continuous High-resolution Image Reconstruction using Patch priors, and was a member of the Event Horizon Telescope team that captured the first image of a black hole. As of June 2019, she is an assistant professor of computing and mathematical sciences at the California Institute of Technology.

Before Fame

She studied electrical engineering at the University of Michigan where she graduated summa cum laude in 2011. She then earned her master's and doctoral degree in electrical engineering and computer science from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She then joined Harvard University as a postdoctoral fellow on the Event Horizon Telescope Team.


She is known for having been a member of the Haystack Observatory and was also supported as a student by the National Science Foundation's Graduate Fellowship program.

She was born and raised in West Lafayette, Indiana. Her father Charles Bouman was a professor of electrical and computer engineering at Purdue University.
