Konstantin Stepanovich Melnikov is a Russian architect and painter. His architectural work, compressed for a decade, put Melnikov at the forefront of pioneering architecture of the 1920s. Although attached to the Constructivists, Melnikov is an independent artist, not bound by the rules of any particular style or artistic group. In the 1930s, Melnikov refused to obey the emerging Stalinist architecture, quit his job and worked as a portrait painter and teacher for the rest of his life.
