Leonard Wood is a major general, paramedic, and officer in the United States Army. He was the Chief of Staff of the United States Army, the Governor of the Cuban Military and the Governor-General of the Philippines. He began his career as a border medical officer, where he received the Medal of Honor. During the Spanish-American War, he commanded the Rough Riders Team, with Theodore Roosevelt in command of the second. Wood was ignored for a major commander during World War I, but later became a Republican leader and a prominent candidate for the presidential nomination in 1920. Born in Winchester, New Hampshire, Wood became an army surgeon after earning an MD from Harvard Medical School. He received the Medal of Honor for his role in the Apache Wars and became the personal doctor of the President of the United States. When the Spanish-American War broke out, Wood and Roosevelt organized the Rough Riders, a regiment of volunteer cavalry.
