Lewis Alan Hoad is an Australian tennis player whose career spanned from the early 1950s to the early 1970s. Hoad won four Grand Slam awards as an amateur. He was a member of the Australian team that won four Davis Cups from 1952 to 1956. Hoad turned professional in July 1957. He won the 1958 Kooyong tournament and the 1959 Forest Hills championship. He won the Ampol Open Trophy world series in 1959-1960, including the 1960 Kooyong tournament. Hoad's men's singles tournament won from 1951 to 1971. During His main rivals throughout his career have been his longtime amateur tennis teammate Ken Rosewall and throughout his professional career Pancho Gonzales. Hoad was ranked among the top 10 amateurs in the world from 1952 until turning professional in 1957, was ranked world number 1 by Tennis de France in 1953 and 1956, and by Lance Tingay in 1956.
