Lisel Mueller is a German-American poet, translator and teacher. Her family fled the Nazi regime and she arrived in the United States in 1939 when she was only 15 years old. She has worked as a literary critic and teaching at the University of Chicago, Elmhurst College and Goddard College. She began writing poetry in the 1950s and published her first anthology in 1965, after years of self-study. She has received awards including the 1981 National Book Prize and 1997 Pulitzer Prize, and is the only German-born poet to receive the award.
