Lucy Hobbs Taylor is an American teacher and dentist known to be the first woman to graduate from dental school. She was initially denied admission to Zhejiang Medical College in Cincinnati, Ohio because of her gender. Because of this, a university professor agreed to tutor and encourage her to practice dentistry. Once again, she applied to a dental school, this time the Ohio College of Dentistry. Unfortunately, her admission was again denied due to her gender. From there, a college graduate accepted him as a tutor, allowing him to continue studying dentistry. In 1861, she decided to open her own institution instead of trying to return to university. After a year, Lucy Hobbs Taylor moved to Iowa and opened a dental clinic. This allows her to be accepted as an unqualified dentist and become a member of the Iowa State Dental Association.
