Marjorie Weinman Sharmat is an American children's writer. She has written over 130 books for children and adolescents and her books have been translated into many languages. They have won accolades that include Book of the Year at the Library of Congress or have become the Literature Association's selection. Perhaps Sharmat's most famous work includes the child detective Nate the Great. It was inspired and named after his father, who lived to see Nate's first book published. One story, Nate the Great Goes Undercover, which was adapted into a TV series, won the Los Angeles International Children's Film Festival Awards. Sharmat's husband, Mitchell Sharmat, expanded Nate's plot by creating Olivia Sharp, his cousin and detective at the same time. The couple wrote four Olivia Sharp books, which were published between 1989 and 1991. During the 1990s, their son Craig Sharmat wrote three Nate books with his mother. In the late 2010s, their other son Andrew wrote Nate's last two books with his mother.
