Marlen Esparza is an American professional fighter who challenged the WBA women's fly belt temporarily in 2019. An amateur, she became the first American woman to qualify for the Olympics in her first year where women's boxing was an Olympic event, winning bronze in the women's fly category. London 2012 Olympics Esparza graduated from Pasadena High School in Pasadena, Texas in 2007. Esparza won a bronze medal at the 2006 World Boxing Championships, gold at the AIBA World Boxing Championships. 2014 and bronze medal at the 2016 AIBA World Feminine Championships. Esparza has an endorsement agreement with CoverGirl Cosmetics. She also appeared in a Spanish advertisement for Coca-Cola. In addition, she collaborated with animal rights advocacy PETA and appeared in an advertisement calling on the public to speak out because of animal abuse. Esparza is the subject of 2011 CNN documentary In Her Corner: Latino in America 2 by Soledad O'Brien .
