Martín Méndez is the bassist of the progressive death metal band Opeth and is the second oldest member of the group, behind singer, musician and guitarist Mikael Åkerfeldt. Méndez has been a member of several other groups, including Fifth to Infinity, Proxima and Vinterkrig. Méndez joined Opeth just before the recording of their third album, My Arms, Your Hearse. However, time conflicts prevented him from playing on the album, so the basslines were recorded by Opeth singer Mikael Åkerfeldt. Martín then learned the bass and bass sections for the next few days directly following the album. Her first real recording with Opeth was their fourth studio album, Still Life. He has been a part of the group ever since. Méndez uses a 4-string Fender Jazz Bass guitar with frets and necks as well as Sandberg bass guitar for live and studio work.
