Marvin Camras is an electrical engineer and inventor with great influence in the field of magnetic recording. Camras built their first recording device, a wired tape recorder, in the 1930s for a cousin who was an aspiring singer. Soon after, he discovered that the use of tapes made the process of joining and archiving recordings easier. Camras's work caught the attention of his professors at the present-day Illinois Institute of Technology and was offered a position with the Armor Research Foundation to further develop his work. Before and during World War II, Camras's first tape recorder was used by the armed forces to train pilots. They are also used for disinformation purposes: the sounds of battle are recorded and amplified, and the recordings are placed where the D-Day invasion will not take place. This work was kept secret until after the war. In June 1944 he received US patent 2,351,004, entitled "Methods and Means of Magnetic Recording".
