Mary Chapin Carpenter is an American singer and songwriter. Carpenter spent several years singing in clubs in Washington, D.C. before signing in the late 1980s with Columbia Records, which marketed her as a country music singer. Carpenter's debut album, Hometown Girl in 1987, did not produce a single, although State of the Heart in 1989 and Shooting Straight in the Dark in 1990, each produced four hits in the top 20 on the Billboard charts. country. Carpenter's most successful album to date remains Come On Come On from 1992, producing seven country singles and was certified four times platinum in the United States with sales exceeding four million copies.
