In May of 1980, she and her daughter, who was 8 years old at the time, were exiting a salon when they were accosted by Ming Sen Shiue. Shiue held them at gunpoint and loaded them into the trunk of his car. A 6-year-old boy witnessed the crime, and Shiue murdered him for it. He took Stauffer and her daughter back to his house, where he kept them in a small closet for 53 days. He raped Stauffer repeatedly, filming the assaults. As it turned out, Shiue had been Stauffer's student 15 years prior. Stauffer eventually managed to free herself from her bonds and contact the authorities, who arrested Shiue.
