Masako Katsura, nicknamed "Katsy" and sometimes referred to as "First Lady billiards", was the most active Japanese caromist in the 1950s. Katsura paved the way for women in this sport by competing and ranking among the best in the world of professional billiards dominated by men. Learning the game for the first time from his brother-in-law, then under the tutelage of Japanese champion Kinrey Matsuyama, Katsura became the only professional player in Japan. Competing in Japan, she won the second place in the national three-band billiards championship three times. During the show, she was noted for running 10,000 points in the right rail game. After marrying a US Army NCO in 1950, Katsura immigrated to the United States in 1951. Here, she was invited to compete in the US-sponsored Three-Cushion World Championship in the year. 1952, eventually winning seventh place in this competition.
