Mikhail Baryshnikov
Mikhail Nikolayevich Baryshnikov is a Soviet-American Russian-American dancer, choreographer and actor. He was the outstanding male ballet dancer of the 1970s and 1980s. He went on to become a famous dance director. Born in Riga, in Latvia SSR, Baryshnikov made a promising start with the Kirov Ballet in Leningrad before defecting to Canada in 1974 for more opportunities in Western dance. After dancing with the American Ballet Theater, he joined the New York City Ballet Theater as a lead dancer for a season to learn the Russian neoclassical style of movement from George Balanchine. He then returned to the American Ballet Theater, where he later became artistic director. Baryshnikov has directed many of his own art projects and is particularly linked to the promotion of modern dance, releasing dozens of new works, many of which are his own.
