Guan Moye, known by his stage name Mo Yan, is a Chinese novelist and short story writer. Donald Morrison of US news magazine TIME called him "one of the most famous Chinese writers, often banned and widely pirated", and Jim Leach called him the Chinese response to with Franz Kafka or Joseph Heller. He is best known to Western readers through his 1987 novel Red Sorghum Clan, where two volumes of Red Sorghum and Sorghum Wine were later adapted into the film Red Sorghum. In 2012, Mo received the Nobel Prize for Literature for his work as a writer "who, with psychedelic realism, combines folk, historical and contemporary tales".
