Neal Leon Cassady was a protagonist in Generation Beat of the 1950s and the psychedelic and counterculture movements of the 1960s. He was marked as himself in the "parchment" version of the above novel. line by Jack Kerouac, and served as the model for the character Dean Moriarty in the 1957 edition of this book. In many of Kerouac's later books, Cassady was portrayed by the character Cody Pomeray. Cassady also appears in poems by Allen Ginsberg and in a number of other literary works by other writers.
