Nichelle Nichols is an American actress, singer and voice actor best known for her role as Nyota Uhura in Star Trek: The Original Series and Its Sequel. Nichols' role as Uhura is a breakthrough for African-American female characters on American television. From 1977 to 2015, Nichols volunteered to spend his time promoting NASA programs and recruiting various astronauts, including women and minorities. As of 2015, Nichols is one of the three surviving members of the original Star Trek cast. The others are William Shatner, George Takei and Walter Koenig.
