Originally from Athens, Georgia, he grew up in the nearby town of Madison. He has won numerous literary awards, including the 2004 Michael Shaara Prize for his novel The Faraway Flame, a quiz on Southerners versus Confederation views during the Civil War. He is also the Townsend Prize winner for the novel for the novel Heart of a Distant Forest and has been honored four times as Georgia Author of the Year. In 2007, he received the Georgia Governor's Prize for the Humanities. Williams's The Divine Comics: A Vaudeville Show in Three Acts, a 1,000-page book recreating Dante's opus Magnum, was published in the fall of 2011. His latest novel, Emerson's Brother, was released in May 2012 from Mercer University Press. .
