Philip Sheridan
Philip Henry Sheridan was a professional US military officer and Union General in the American Civil War. His career was noted for his rapid promotion to Major General and close ties to Commander-in-Chief Ulysses S. Grant, who switched Sheridan from commanding an infantry division at the Western Theater to leader of the cavalry corps of the Potomac Army in the east. In 1864 he defeated Confederacy forces under General Jubal Early in the Shenandoah Valley and his destruction of the valley's economic infrastructure, known to its residents as "The Burning," was the one of the earliest uses of debauchery in warfare. In 1865, his cavalry pursued General Robert E. Lee and contributed to his surrender at Appomattox. Sheridan later fought in the Great Plains Indian War. As a soldier and a private citizen, he has contributed to the development and protection of Yellowstone National Park.
