Pope Pius XII, born Eugenio Maria Giuseppe Giovanni Pacelli, was head of the Catholic Church and the sovereignty of the Vatican City State from March 2, 1939 until his death in 1958. Before being elected Pope, he was secretary of the ministry. The Church, the Pope's nuncio in Germany, and the Cardinal Foreign Minister, as someone who worked on signing treaties with European and Latin American countries, such as the Reichskonkordat with Germany. While the Vatican was formally neutral during World War II, the Reichskonkordat and its leadership of the Catholic Church throughout the war remain controversial - including accusations of public silence and not acting on the fate of the Jews. Pius used diplomacy to save the Nazi victims of the war and, by ordering the Church to provide secret aid to Jews and others, saved hundreds of thousands of lives.
