Richard Davis "Dick" Winters is a United States Army officer and decorated veteran. He is best known for having commanded the Easy Company of the 2nd Battalion, the 506 Airborne Infantry Regiment, belonging to the 101st Airborne Division, during World War II. Eventually, he was promoted to major and commander of the 2nd Battalion.As a lieutenant, Winters parachuted into Normandy in the early hours of D-Day, June 6, 1944, then fought for France, the Netherlands, Belgium and finally the Germany. After the surrender of the Germans in May 1945, he left the 506 Division and was stationed in France, where high-ranking officers were needed to oversee his return. In 1951, during the Korean War, Winters was recalled to the Army from the Inactive List and briefly served as a Staff Regiment Training and Planning Officer in Fort Dix, New Jersey.
