Robert Francis Boyle is an American production designer and director. Born in Los Angeles, Boyle trained as an architect, graduating from the University of Southern California. When Boyle lost his job in this field during the Great Depression, Boyle looked for part-time jobs in movies. In 1933, he was hired as a manuscript in the artistic department of Paramount Pictures, headed by artistic director Hans Dreier. Beginning with Cecil B. DeMille's The Plainsman, Boyle continued to work on a variety of images as a designer, manuscript, and assistant art director before becoming art director at Universal Studios in the early 1940s. Boyle has collaborated with Alfred Hitchcock on numerous occasions, first as collaborative art director for Saboteur, then as official production designer for North by Northwest, The Birds and Marnie. Deprived of permission to film on Mount Rushmore, Hitchcock turned to Boyle to create lifelike replicas of rock heads.
