Robert Atkinson Westall is an English author and teacher best known for his novels for children and young adults. In the latter case, some deal with complex, dark and adult subjects. He has been called "the foremost of British war novelists". His first book, The Machine Gunners, won the 1975 Carnegie Medal for Best Children's Book of the Year on the British Subject. He was named one of the top ten medal recipients during his 70th birthday celebration in 2007. Westall also won a second Carnegie, the Smarties Award and the Only Guardian Award in Life.
