Sarel Daniel van der Merwe is a former racer and racecar driver who has been a champion multiple times among South African racers. He is referred to with the nickname "Supervan". Van der Merwe won the South African Rally Drivers' Championship 11 times in 1975, 1977-1985 and 1988. Van der Merwe's IMSA career included playing time for Hendrick Motorsports in the Corvette GTP era, as well. was the tournament that led to the NASCAR Sprint Cup championship for the team, Watkins Glen in 1990, when driver Hendrick Darrell Waltrip was recovering from a serious leg injury on the last Firecracker 400 test where he finished 24; van der Merwe attempted to qualify for the 1988 Daytona 500 in a vehicle owned by Hendrick, but was unable to pass the race. He also hosted the SA Saloon Car Championship, the SA Innovative Car Championship, and won the 1996 Castrol International Motor Championship championship ending in Swaziland. It received Springbok in 1976 and South African national color in 1997 .
