Steve Roland "Pre" Prefontaine is an American long-distance runner who competed at the 1972 Summer Olympics. While racing for the Oregon Racecourse Club, Prefontaine set the American record in socks. both distances from 2,000 to 10,000 meters, in preparation for the 1976 Olympics Prefontaine's career, along with Jim Ryun, Frank Shorter and Bill Rodgers, created considerable media coverage, helping to inspire The "explosion of running" in the 1970s. He died at the age of 24 in a car accident near his residence in Eugene, Oregon. One of the most important racing competitions in the world, the Prefontaine Classic, is held annually in Eugene to honor him. Préfontaine's popularity and charisma then were the result of two 1990s feature films about his short life.
