Susan Lillian Townsend, FRSL, is an English writer and comedian with work including fiction, drama, and journalism. She is best known for creating the character Adrian Mole. After writing in secret at the age of 14, Townsend first emerged thanks to his plays, his signature character first appearing in a radio drama, but his works soon expanded to other forms. She enjoyed great success in the 1980s, with her Adrian Mole book selling more copies than any other British fiction in the decade. The series, which ultimately consists of nine books, takes the form of the character's diary. The earliest books tell the story of a boy's life during the Thatcher years, but at the end of this streak describes Adrian Mole in his fifties. The Queen and I, another well-known work that has also been well received, have been the outlet for his Republican affection, although the Royal Family is always expressed with sympathy.
