Sir Edward Richard George "Ted" Heath, is a British politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1970 to 1974 and leader of the Conservative Party from 1965 to 1975. Heath was a congressman for 51 years from 1950-2001. In addition to being active in politics, Heath was also a world-class rowing athlete and talented musician. Born to be the son of a carpenter and a housekeeper, Heath attended a high school and became a leader in student policy while studying at Oxford University. He served as an officer in the Royal Artillery during World War II. He briefly worked in the civil service, but resigned to run for Congress and was elected to Bexley in the 1950 election. He was promoted to director of Rocket by Anthony Eden in 1955, and in 1959 was appointed to Cabinet by Harold Macmillan as Minister of Labor. He then assumed the role of Lord Privy Seal and in 1963 was appointed by Alec Douglas-Home as Chairman of the Board of Trade.
