Viktor Lvovich Korchnoi was a Soviet and Swiss grandmaster and chess writer. He is considered one of the strongest players ever to become the world chess champion. Born in Leningrad, Soviet Union, Korchnoi fled to the Netherlands in 1976 and resided in Switzerland since 1978, becoming a Swiss citizen. Korchnoi played four matches, including three official matches, against GM Anatoly Karpov. In 1974, Korchnoi lost to Karpov in the Candidate final. Karpov was declared World Champion in 1975 when GM Bobby Fischer refused to defend his title. Korchnoi went on to win two consecutive Candidate rounds to qualify for World Championship matches against Karpov in 1978 and 1981, but lost to both. These two players also drew 6 matches in 1971. Korchnoi has 10 times as a candidate for world championship.
