American spy who worked with the British Special Operations Executive and the American Office of Strategic Services to organize espionage, reconnaissance, and sabotage against the Axis troops. In 1941, she was the first female spy to relocate to France. After moving to Lyon, she established the Heckler Network. For fifteen months, she organized resistance operations in Lyon. Among her recruiters were prominent gynecologists and wealthy brothel madams. She gave agents guns, cash, and food, as well as medical care to fallen airmen. By late 1942, she was being hunted by the Gestapo and was forced to flee the country. She returned to France somewhat unscathed in 1944. She re-established rebel units and re-supplied firearms to them. Prior to the arrival of American troops in Haute-Loire, the resistance forces she led successfully drove the Germans out. Later in life, she was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the Croix de Guerre, and an MBE. She didn't leave any memoirs or give any interviews regarding her military service.
