Vivien Theodore Thomas is an American lab supervisor who developed a procedure used to treat Blue Baby Syndrome in the 1940s. He was the assistant of surgeon Alfred Blalock in the Laboratory. Blalock experimental animals at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, and later at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Thomas was the only one as he had no professional training or experience in research laboratories; however, he was supervisor of the Johns Hopkins Surgical Laboratory for 35 years. In 1976, Hopkins awarded him an honorary doctorate and appointed him as an instructor of surgery at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Without a high school education, Thomas broke through poverty and racism to become a pioneer of heart surgery and a professor of surgical technique for many of the country's most famous surgeons. A PBS Partners of the Heart documentary film, released in 2003 on PBS's American Experience channel.
