Washington Irving was an early 19th century American writer, essayist, biographer, historian, and diplomat. He is known for the short stories "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy. Hollow", both of which appear in the Geoffrey Crayon Sketchbook collection, Ghent. His historical works include biographies of Oliver Goldsmith, Muhammad and George Washington, as well as several stories from 15th century Spain that address subjects such as Alhambra, Christopher Columbus, and Moors. Irving was the Ambassador of the United States to Spain in the 1840s. Born and raised in Manhattan into a family of merchants, Irving launched literature in 1802 with a series of Observation Letters for the Morning Chronicle, written under the pseudonym Jonathan Oldstyle. He moved temporarily to England for the family business in 1815, where he gained a reputation for publishing Geoffrey Crayon's, Gent. Sketchbook, published 1819–20.
