Wystan Hugh Auden is an English American poet. Auden's poetry is known for its stylistic and technical achievements, its political, ethical, love and religious affiliation, and its variety of tone, form, and content. . Some of his most famous poems are about love, such as "Funerals"; on political and social topics, such as "September 1, 1939" and "The Shield of Achilles"; on cultural and psychological topics, such as Anxiety; and on religious topics such as "For the moment" and "Horae Canonicae". He was born in York and raised in and near Birmingham into a working middle-class family. He attended independent English schools and studied English at Christ Church, Oxford. After a few months in Berlin in 1928-1929, he spent five years teaching at private British preparatory schools, then went to Iceland and China to write books about his travels. In 1939 he moved to the United States and became a United States citizen in 1946, retaining his British citizenship.
