In 1954, he received his bachelor's degree from Rhodes University in South Africa. Before releasing his first novel, When the Lion Feeds, in 1964, he worked as an accountant.
In his native Northern Rhodesia, he spent much of his boyhood working on a cattle ranch (modern-day Zambia).
Before marrying his third wife, Danielle Thomas, in 1971, he had been married and divorced twice and had three children. Until her death in 1999, he dedicated all of his publications to her.
The Diamond Hunters, based on his story, was made into a film starring TV Actress Alyssa Milano.
