Charles William Beebe is an American naturalist, ornithologist, marine biologist, entomologist, explorer and author. He is remembered for the many expeditions he made for the Zoological Society of New York, diving deep into the Bathysphere, and his many scientific writings for academics and the public. Born in Brooklyn, New York and raised in East Orange, New Jersey, Beebe dropped out of school before earning a degree to work in New York's New Animal Park, where he was responsible for looking after the zoo's birds. He quickly distinguished himself in his work for the zoo, first with his skills in designing habitats for its bird populations, and soon after with a series of research expeditions of increasing length, including a worldwide expedition to save pheasants in the world.
