William Manuel Johnson
William Manuel "Bill" Johnson, is an American jazz musician, banjo and bass doubles player; He is considered the father of double bass 'slap' style. In New Orleans, he performed at Lulu White's legendary brothel, with the Eagle Band and with the Bronze Excelsior Band. Johnson claims to have started "slapping" his bass strings after accidentally breaking his bowstring on the road with his band in northern Louisiana in the early 1910s. Orleans adopted this style and popularized it nationwide with broadcasting the New Orleans Jazz. Johnson was the founder and director of the first jazz group to leave New Orleans and tour widely in the 1910s, The Original Creole Orchestra. The children participated in a variety show revolving around the characters "Uncle" and "boys", performing in the Midwest, Northwest and Canada. He brought the Creole Band to Chicago in 1915 .
